Officer Who Threw Student Had a Long History of Violence

officer ben fieldsBy now you've probably already seen the video that shows Officer Ben Fields throwing a student to the ground after she refused to follow orders. The officer has since been fired for how he dealt with the situation. However, given this police officer's history, he probably should have been fired a long time ago.

Former students of the school allege that he has body slammed numerous students before, and has been tried in court on multiple occasions for excessive force and racial bias, but has always come away clean. However, one case from 2005 stands out for being particularly brutal. Officer Fields, who at the time was a rookie cop, approached an Army Field medic by the name of Carlos Martin in a South Carolina parking lot. According to Martin, he had just gotten off work from the Moncrief Army Community Hospital, when Officer Fields showed up to respond to a noise complaint, and noticed that he was playing loud music from his car.

An argument ensued between them, and when Martin called him "dude" Officer Fields "snapped," slammed him to the ground, and pepper sprayed him. The spray didn't subdue the medic since he had been trained to withstand chemical agents in the military, so Fields emptied the entire canister in his face. When his wife came outside to take pictures of the encounter with her cell phone, Fields told his partner to "get her black ass," before he restrained her and tried to delete the photos. The charges against Martin and his wife were eventually dropped, but in the 4 years it took for the case to go to trial, the Army discharged him for the incident.

He and his now ex-wife filed lawsuits against the Sheriff's department, which were later dropped due to a lack of evidence. Martin lamented the fact that Fields was never charged with anything, and that the incident at the high school could have been prevented. "I felt like if he had felt the consequences from 2005, this wouldn't happen today."
